We got the verdict on the accident estimate today and it looks like simple "hit and run" turned into a totaled vehicle. At first Shane and I couldn't begin to believe our "bad luck" or even understand why this would happen and how we were going to bounce back from this, but after many nights of prayer and searching for the meaning, we've come to realize this might be a chance to start over in a seemingly dead economy.
Shane and I live within three miles of where we each work. Last summer when gas was astronomical, we decided to buy bikes and ride them to and from work. It takes me seven minutes one way and Shane only about 15 (which believe it or not is quicker by bike than car due to stinkin' traffic) Luckily due to our misfortune of having to re rent our current digs only to have one car totaled a week later we were able to see the silver lining ahead. As of tomorrow we dig our bikes out of the closet and start riding them on our quest to save money. Our car insurance will actually go down $254.00 a year, almost $21.00 a month, we were up for renewal tabs this year so we saved money there, and think of all the gas and oil changes on two cars, not to mention the serious maintenance the Ford has cost us in the last four years that we don't have to worry about anymore.
It is going to be really tough to get used to sharing one car after always having two at our disposal, but as long as we can make it through the summer we can do some car shopping in the fall.
One thing is for sure, I'm glad this whole process is almost over because I am so tired, and physically and emotionally beat due to all of the stress. They still have not notified us of whether the suspect had coverage for the accident but like the estimator said today, "they sent me out here to price it, so that should mean something in your favor."
Um-I think we need a vacation!

So sorry to hear about the hit and run Brit! Man that does suck but saving money now days is an awesome thing to be able to do. Dane and I have actually been sharing one car for over a year now and after the initial inconvenience we have made it work nicely and it's not too bad at all. Good luck and hang in there!
WAy to go with the bikes though! That's TOTALLY proactive in your situation. I'm SUPER impressed. Good luck with all of that though...that stinks big time. I hope they give you AWESOME insurance money for a sweet new ride in the fall :) (but keep biking too!)
Oh man. I'm so sorry to hear about your car. My car was involved in a hit and run before and it was such a pain to deal with. I'm impressed that you can see the good side in all of this. I hope everything works out!
P.S. You made me want to pull my bike out and ride it around. :)
So sorry to hear about your car, I swear car troubles and accidents are so annoying and stressful! I read your blog and then walked around my house and saw a quote I have hanging on my kitchen wall and I thought it might give you a little strength...
"Courage doesn't always roar, sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying I will try again tomorrow!" This little saying has brought me strength throughout tough times or even little trials in my life and I hope it brings you the same!
